Introduced at the Turin Motor Show  in October 1970 alongside the Spitfire IV, with which it shares some body panels. Although the GT6 Mk 3 could out accelerate it's internal BL rival the MGB GT and had a higher top speed, both cars were overshadowed by the Datsun 240Z.

A minor revamp in 1973 mostly refined the interior but production ended in December 1973 after 13,042 units were produced.
